THEY DIDN’T PREPARE ME FOR THIS

In the first place I wish to welcome my good followers and friends to this beginning of Spring or Autumn (Fall) as the case may be. Without doubt, these moments of the year give rise to varied sentiments in each of us.

In relation to the present post experience has shown me that school authorities, at least here in Argentina, have in general, given little heed to the need to prepare their teachers in matters of classroom and behavior management. This is not surprising perhaps, seeing that here in Argentina as in many other parts of the world, teacher formation continues to put emphasis on, for example, the history and philosophy of education, methodology and class planning, among others. All of which, of course, is necessary and fundamental, but it cannot be ignored that today especially, teachers need training in the management of classroom behavior.

It is well-known from the many surveys made throughout the world, that one of the greatest problems that all teachers have to face daily is that of class interruption due to the misbehavior of some students, either in the form of verbal abuse or lack of respect. A number of teachers have decided to abandon the teaching profession because the level of misbehavior in the classroom became intolerable. It appears that most teachers acknowledge that they have not been prepared to confront this problem adequately. It is therefore evident that such interruptions not only affect the quality of learning and school life but can also contribute to truancy, gang formation and to family dysfunction.

It would appear then that teacher formation continues to be overburdened with abstract theory and little help with concrete, practical and realistic issues such as behavior management within the classroom. It seems absolutely necessary to add to the theory and teacher perceptions of child formation, elements that will help him/her with such matters as proper classroom control. It is obvious that all the best theory in the world will not suffice if adequate control and management of the class is absent.

For this reason I continue to insist, that as a priority, teachers need assistance and proper training in matters of classroom management, something which will be demanded of them every day of the school year. Neither true teaching nor behavior management is just conceptual. (to be continued)
